Eastbourne May 2010

Bible by the Beach Fri 30th April – Mon 3rd May 2010

Half a dozen CSF members met up in beautiful Eastbourne for ‘Bible by the Beach’ over the first bank holiday weekend in May. In case you have visions of 1,200 people all huddled together on the shingle in the Sunday rain, let me hasten to add that the event was held in the comfortable surroundings of the Congress Theatre!

The theme went straight to the centre of our Christian faith. Alistair Begg, a Scotsman over from Cleveland, Ohio, warmed our hearts with Bible teaching on ‘Glory in the Cross’. Worship at the evening celebrations was led by Stuart Townend with Lou Fellingham and the band Phatfish. On the Sunday evening the auditorium was almost filled to capacity as we were joined by others from local churches. Looking at John 18:1-11, Bishop Wallace Benn pointed us to Jesus Christ: Jesus the faithful man; Jesus the Son of Man who is also the unique Son of God; Jesus the Saviour who keeps his promises; Jesus the Saviour who takes upon himself God’s just judgement for our sins; and Jesus the Saviour, the King of a different kingdom.

There was a choice of seminar streams. I opted to find out more about the Puritans. Today they have a somewhat negative image but in a lively and engaging presentation Gerald Bray showed us clearly that the Puritans have much to teach us about faith and godliness. I also went to a seminar on Science and the Bible. True science definitely does not exclude God!

In between sessions there was time to wander along the front, enjoy the Saturday sunshine and stop for refreshments by the sea. We enjoyed our fellowship together as a group and had some interesting discussions over meals in a local restaurant.

Many thanks to Patricia for her excellent and encouraging report! SF
