New Year holiday at Swanwick 2013-14
REPORT ON NEW YEAR HOLIDAY 2014 by Susan Turner
This year we went to the Hayes Conference Centre at Swanwick, Derbyshire for our New Year holiday. There were 19 of us including some new faces. It was good to meet up with old friends and make new ones. The holiday was led by Peter and Jackie Reason again but Howard did his very enjoyable quiz on the first night which got us all talking and laughing together.
The food was excellent, several choices at each meal and very plentiful. The staff were very friendly and helpful too. There were many more groups of people staying there but we had our own tables reserved in the dining room. I really like the fact that we have the choice to move around and sit with different people at each meal which really helps to get to know everybody.
On New Year’s Eve afternoon several of us went to Matlock Baths for a walk along the river and to explore Matlock. On the Wednesday 11 of us went to Butterley station and had a steam train ride. This was even more enjoyable as Chris negotiated for us to go in at half price and this included a free drink and mince pie.
Tuesday evening we did some dancing and games before seeing in the New Year. The last night we had the usual talent night which proved very enjoyable.
Before breakfast each day we had Thought for the Day and after breakfast the Reasons led an hour’s worship. On the final morning this included communion and some good singing. Brenda then told us about future holidays and gave everyone a framed text as a present from the committee, which was much appreciated. It was then time for photos and goodbyes after a time which had, as always gone too quickly.
(Many thanks to Susan for the excellent report and great photos! SF)
